Your Favorite Flower & the Story Behind It Contest!

This is one of my favorite times of the year. All of my favorite flowers are blooming now or will be very soon. One of my all time favorite flowers has to be Lilacs. Some of my earliest memories regarding my love for flowers goes back to my maternal Grandma's house. She had all of the quintessential "old fashioned" flowers, that I love: Snowball bushes, Peonies, Hydrangea, Wisteria & my favorite, Lilacs.

Grandma had a row of beautiful Lilac bushes right outside of her kitchen & bathroom windows. When the air was warm, she would open up the windows & that intoxicating scent would fill the house. To this day whenever I smell Lilacs it takes me right back to that time in my life. Each year I try to plant new Lilac bushes somewhere in my yard. I hope to have grandchildren someday who will play under them & think of me whenever they smell their wonderful fragrance.

I am offering you a chance to win a wreath, designed by me, for a front or back door, made of quality silks using some of the winner's favorite flower. All you need to do is tell me your favorite flower, why you love it & the story behind it.

I will run this contest until Saturday, May 10th at midnight. The winner will be announced on Monday, May 12th, so check back to see if you are the winner.

This is the first contest that I have offered & to be fair, I am asking my husband, Scott & Valerie(she is a designer at my flower shop) to choose the winner. Good Luck & I cannot wait to read all of your stories!

Happy Mother's Day to you all!

Hi Tammy, Congratulations on your first contest...how fun for us!!

My favorite flower, as you know, are hydrangeas. There is no special story behind them other than I LOVE them. They are so delicate, beautiful and long lasting. I enjoy watching their colors change and I especially love to dry them and display them all around the house in baskets, old painted cans, in wreaths...it helps to bring the garden and my love of flowers indoors so everyone can enjoy them all year, even during the winter.

Many people would wonder why my favorite flower is a daisy. I have study hypnosis and have use it in many whys through my life. You might wonder what hypnosis has to do with my favorite flower. Well here is my story. I was three months pregnant with my second son when I began very sick and hospitalized... I won’t go into detail. I had to have major surgery, which was life threatening for my baby and me. I came through okay, but I still had to fight for my baby to live. I didn’t know if I would be able to carrying him full term. I practice hypnotism every night during my time in the hospital. I would picture a favorite place in my mind to relax which was a field of daisies. One day in my hypnosis state I walk though that field with a baby in my arms that is when I new he would be okay.
A Daisy is my favorite flower,

My favorite flower is the hibiscus. Why? Because it doesn't bloom that often and when it does. I get so excited! Like baby is here! It is such a gorgeous flower!

Mmmm...I can't decide, and that is the honest truth....

I do want to support your contest though and I love hearing the gorgeous stories!

And if I had to narrow the field, as it were, (all puns intended)
I love sunflowers and pansies....
For some reason, moments of my life have been marked by them...
In some form or fashion these two flowers were present on my first date...my wedding...the birth of my children...and when my dad told me had cancer...they were present when I signed up for the military, right there in a vase!...and the list goes on...
of course the Pansy has a tie in to my name and the word Pansy is a form of penser, to think or thought...and the sunflower has just a no nonsense mother earth quality... and of course then it has this...

A model for the pattern of florets in the head of a sunflower was proposed by H Vogel. This is expressed in polar coordinates
where θ is the angle, r is the radius or distance from the center, and n is the index number of the floret and c is a constant scaling factor. It is a form of Fermat's spiral. The angle 137.5° is related to the golden ratio and gives a close packing of florets. This model has been used to produce computer graphics representations of sunflowers.

Compliments of WIKI and THE MUSE.

When I was little my dad had planted these ugly plants along the walkway leading up to our home. The leaves were big and had a deep green color. Less than a week later they spouted these fragrant white flower that everyone who passed by loved.

As I walked to school one morning, I stopped and grabbed one and put it in my hair the smell stayed with me all day. That flower was a gardenia and today is just not my favorite scent, but my favorite flower. It is one of the few scents that retains a bit of my childhood.

This is so much fun...thanks for the contest.
I love flowers and have a hard time choosing just one. Lilac is also a favorite of mine as I have a lilac bush planted right beside my small rose garden. I do love Peonies as well. They are so feminine and beautiful to look at. I use to work with an older gentleman that would bring me a bouquet of them each year from his wifes garden. I miss getting them! I could go on for days but I must say Peonies are at the top of my list.

That day I was at my cousins house and he drove up him and a friend and handed me a vase of Roses. It was so wonderful and special to know somene thought of me.I was smiling form ear to ear with appreciation.

My Favorite flower is roses, you see they are so beautiful and bring so much love and joy to me. They are very special to me!! When my family and I found out that my dad was dying all he wanted to do was smell his roses that was planted in the yard just one more time. So that is why I love roses so much because it reminds me of my dad. The colors of the roses are truly a wonderful site to see as well.

Wow... a contest. I LOVE contests.

My favorite flowers are lilacs. I live in Canada, and the smell of lilacs is a sure sign that spring - and summer - is right around the corner. I can't get enough of the light, sweet smell of them. I'm really fortunate that I currently live just 15 KM away from "The Lilac Capital of Ontario."

As far as a story behind my love for lilacs....
When I was younger, we lived in Canada's Arctic for most of the year, but we spent our summers in Montreal. One year, we "migrated" early (at Easter, instead of the end of the school year). This would have been the first spring I was old enough to appreciate that was spent in a climate where trees and flowers bud and bloom. I remember that my mother used to take us to a park and the entire perimeter was lined with lilac bushes - probably growing in the backyards of the surrounding houses. I don't have any specific memories, but the smell of lilacs always reminds me of carefree childhood happiness.

The White Iris

The Iris danced across
the ancient Grecian skies. Gliding with her
embossed
satiny milken sides.

Her lithe and nimble limbs moved methodically...
From her cream white petals to her supple stem. The nectar that she carried was transposed into a hymn.

"I must use my moments wisely, for they shall soon pass away... And be lost to me forever... A mere memory of my yesterdays...

"Thus she sung
And thus she cried.
Her voice set to harp
And lyre. So true a call
So true a heart did Zeus himself see...

"Come now unto
Mt Olympus

Oh white Iris,
And our announcer be"...
She floated along
In such a curving grace...
Transposed she was
In time and space...

The blessed arched path
Which she did go,
Became the journey for
All our eternal rainbows.
